Chevrolet’s Industry-First Buckle to Drive Feature

Summer is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated time of the year. For teens and youths, the season signifies a long and fun-filled break ahead. Summer also is a phase where there's a significant increase in the number of vehicles on the road.

With that being said, teens usually enjoy taking their cars for a spin, and a few not pay much heed to safety. The brand-new models of the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse SUV, the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu sedan, and 2020 Chevrolet Colorado pickup have introduced an augmented teen drive mode.

The ‘Buckle to Drive’ feature Chevrolet has introduced is a first in the industry. As the name suggests, this feature requires the driver to buckle into their seats before they can change their transmission from ‘park’ to ‘drive’.

The latest feature works in quite a simple manner. If the car is running and they apply the brake, an audible alert pops up on the instrument panel, which displays the message ‘Buckle Seat Belt to Shift’. This mode will not allow the driver to move the stick out of the park about they have fastened for 20 seconds.

The feature works only when the vehicle is in the ‘Teen Driver Mode’ Chevrolet incorporates. The mode can active and unlock with a PIN code. If the car is in Teen Driver Mode, it will lower the radio volumes until the driver and front-seat passenger is fastened with their seat belt.

To take it a step further, the vehicle also calculates a ‘report card’ which provides details of distance driven, maximum speed, several warnings alerted, wide-open throttle “events,” and how often stability, traction, and antilock braking systems activates

Car crashes are a leading cause of death American teenagers often fall victim to. In most cases, it reports the teen driver unbuckled from their seat. At Chevrolet, safety is of paramount significance. The brand encourages positive conversations around car safety and usage. With these new features, teens are sure to know of safe driving measures and shall set a positive example for their peers as well.
